NFL: WHY IS FOOTBALL ASSOCIATED WITH THANKSGIVING?

The final stretch of the year begins, and with it the realization of many celebrations such as Thanksgiving Day in the United States, where American families gather to thank everything that happened to them throughout the year with a delicious dinner and the NFL on their television.

But do you know why the football league is associated with Thanksgiving? If your answer is no, we’ll explain it here.

American Football is a variation of Rugby and was invented at the end of the 19th century, at first only students played it. The NFL was founded in 1920 under the name American Professional Football Association, in that year the first Thanksgiving game was held between the Canton Bulldogs and Akron Pros.

Five years later, a game was held again on that day, this time the protagonists were the Chicago Bears against the Chicago Cardinal, only this time there were 36 thousand spectators.

The success led the NFL to first broadcast a game on Thanksgiving Day in 1934 with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, the latter of which made the tradition of playing each year on this date its own.

From 1941 to 1944 the activity was suspended due to World War II, but since 1945 the custom has not been interrupted.

Today there are already three duels that take place on Thanksgiving Day; The Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys play every year at home and the third game is the most attractive because they are two teams in great form or with high popularity.

For this occasion, the games are as follows: 11:30, Lions vs Packers; 3:30 p.m., Cowboys vs. Washington and 7:20 p.m., Seahawks vs. 49ers.
