For years, people have talked about Jerry Jones’ true influence in the National Football League (NFL). In addition to being one of the richest guys in the world, Jones has always made us feel like he’s untouchable, no matter what he gets involved in.
NFL News: Jerry Jones is NFL’s ‘shadow commissioner,’ claims anonymous agent
He has always had the final say in everything he gets entangled in, and his hands-on approach as the owner of the Dallas Cowboys has brought him a lot of success, at least in terms of profitability.
That’s why an anonymous NFL agent believes he is the real commissioner, claiming he is by far the most powerful person in the league, even ahead of Roger Goodell:
“Hands down, hands down, No. 1, and anyone who says otherwise is an absolute idiot. Jerry Jones is the shadow commissioner of the National Football League,” the agent told Ben Standig of The Athletic.
According to the agent, nothing ever gets done in the league without Jones’ input and approval, and he went so far as to blame him for the Stan Kroenke and Dean Spanos scandals:
“He has rained more for more owners than any other man in the history of professional American soccer in the United States. He single-handedly backstabbed Dean Spanos and the Chargers organization with what he did for Stan Kroenke in the Rams deal, which was obviously in the best interest of the NFL.” the report added.
However, the agent doesn’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. If anything, Jones has helped turn soccer into a billion-dollar industry and what it is today:
“‘He’ made Roger Goodell his puppet. He’s intimately involved in almost every marketing deal the NFL has done to the tune of more than $1 billion,” he said. the agent added. “And he’s brought windfall profits to all these owners.”
Like many other business tycoons, Jones has made a living out of making the most of his leverage. But perhaps the most notable aspect of this is the fact that he still managed to get all of his colleagues on his side.
“Say what you want about the guy, but he knows how to get the other owners to befriend him while competing against him,” another agent added to himself. The Cowboys may not be the powerhouse they once were on the field. But they’re still the most powerful team in the league, and that won’t change as long as Jerry Jones is around.
