Manchester City will strive to follow up on their midweek comeback win with another three Premier League points when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the visitors are looking to extend their unbeaten runaway run in the top flight to four games and stay away from the relegation zone.
After securing a 1-0 home win against other Premier League fighters, West Ham United, last weekend, Wolves were defeated by the same score in front of their own fans against Liverpool in their FA Cup third-round replay on Tuesday night. Julen Lopetegui believes his team deserved more of their midweek battle with the Reds, but a first-half goal from Harvey Elliott finally knocked out the West Midlands side in the first hurdle.
Manchester City’s only injury concern is with right-back Rico Lewis, who is doubtful for Sunday after coming out in the final stages against Spurs with a minor ankle injury; the 18-year-old could be replaced by Kyle Walker in the first XI. Central defenders duo John Stones and Ruben Dias returned from their respective hamstring and physical problems to play some role on Thursday and both will be in contention to start against Wolves along with Manuel Akanji, Aymeric Laporte, and Nathan Ake; the latter can keep his place ahead of Joao Cancelo at left-back, however.
As for Wolves, Diego Costa recovered from a knock to play off the bench against Liverpool and the 34-year-old will start in attack alongside Raul Jimenez, Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan. However, Sasa Kalajdzic (ACL), Pedro Neto (ankle), Boubacar Traore (groin) and Chiquinho (knee) remain sidelined with injuries.
