With the theme of the exhibition boxing bout between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III being “Last Names Matter,” one can expect a true family affair on June 11.
Gotti, the grandson of New York gangster John Gotti, competes in his third boxing bout. The fight is at the FLA Live Arena in Florida and airs on the Zeus Network.
With a 5-1 MMA record, Gotti knows a thing or two about using his hands. While the name Gotti has a reputation, he’s attempting to leave behind a legacy separate from his family.
“This is a true ‘Rocky’ story. … I’m proud of my son and all that he has accomplished,” John’s father, Junior Gotti, told The New York Post. “When my son said he would leave his own mark in this world, he meant it. Here’s a kid who has no vices, doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, and has an awe-inspiring work ethic. On top of that, he’s loyal to a fault. How do you not root for such a man?”
Boxing vs. MMA history: Mayweather vs UFC’s McGregor and more
Mayweather (50-0) has competed in six exhibition bouts since retiring in 2017. The Hall of Famer still has fun in the ring, even with no titles on the line. Collecting money and entertaining fans is proving to be enough of a motivator.
“I’m all about bringing the biggest and best events to the people, and Sunday, June 11, is going to be like nothing else you’ve seen in the sports and entertainment world,” said Mayweather. “This is all about combining the entertainment of top-flight musical performances with top-flight skills in the ring. I love the fans in South Florida, and I know they’re going to appreciate this premier event we’re going to bring to them.”
